Certain foods can be extra-problematic for those who suffer from acid reflux, also known as heartburn. Unfortunately, when it comes to acid reflux, chocolate is a triple threat. It is high in cocoa, fat, and stimulants (caffeine and theobromine) – all of which contribute to acid reflux.
This time of year, it can be difficult to avoid chocolate because it is usually tucked into those decorative boxes of Valentine’s Day candy. But luckily there are some alternatives. If you or a loved one is struggling with acid reflux, here are other foods you can eat or give as a sweet treat.
• White chocolate, which isn’t technically chocolate, but could satisfy a sweet tooth.
• Dried fruit and nuts are often inside fancy chocolates, but can be yummy alone.
• Carob, which tastes similar to chocolate, but is low in fat and caffeine-free.
If you do decide to indulge in chocolate, do so in moderation. Also, be sure to eat it at least 3 hours before bedtime since laying down can make acid reflux worse. Remember that acid reflux can usually be treated by a combination of drug therapy and lifestyle changes. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications. So be sure to talk to your doctor if you are experiencing chronic sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and chest pain.
