Dr. Peter Kaufman Named to the ONC’s Healthcare IT Standards Committee

Peter N. Kaufman, MD has been named to the ONC’s Healthcare IT Standards Committee (HITSG) Privacy and Security Workgroup (P&S WG).The HITSG is a federal advisory committee that is charged with making recommendations to the National Coordinator for Health IT on standards, implementation specifications, and certification criteria for the electronic exchange and use of health information. The P&S WG will make recommendations to the HITSG on privacy and security requirements that should be included in standards, certification criteria, and implementation specifications.

While maintaining a part-time medical practice at Capital Digestive Care, Dr. Kaufman has spent the past 20 years working in healthcare IT, initially as the President of PiNK software, producing a small-practice EMR, and for the past 12 years as Chief Medical Officer at DrFirst, an e-health connectivity company known primarily for e-prescribing. He has served on CCHIT (Certification Commission for Health Information Technology) developing certification standards for e-prescribing, ASTM helping develop the CCR (Continuity of Care Record), and working with AHRQ (Agency for Health Research and Quality), DEA, and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health piloting controlled-drug e-prescribing. Dr. Kaufman has been one of the driving forces for legal electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS), and has spoken nationally on identity proofing, 2-factor authentication, and EPCS.
