Biography
Dr. Matthew Chandler has always been interested in combining scientific knowledge with service to others. Today, Dr. Chandler brings those interests together as a board-certified, fellowship-trained gastroenterologist. He is a compassionate specialist who takes an evidence-based approach to gastroenterology care.
He is comfortable working within all areas of gastroenterology, and he has a particular interest in the following conditions:
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Crohn’s disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- General gastroenterology
- Colon cancer screening
After earning his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, Dr. Chandler attended medical school at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. He completed residency training in internal medicine at George Washington University, where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and served a year as chief resident. He then pursued a fellowship in gastroenterology at George Washington University.

Before joining Capital Digestive Care, Dr. Chandler spent 13 years in clinical academic medicine at George Washington University and worked as the director of the university’s gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship program. During his time at GW, Dr. Chandler published peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and abstracts and was actively involved in training more than 30 gastroenterologists, teaching clinical skills and endoscopic procedures.
He has been named to Washingtonian magazine’s Top Doctors list.
