Clear Liquid Diet

A clear liquid diet is often recommended to prepare for certain medical tests or procedures, especially surgical procedures, that require no food in your stomach or intestines. It may also be recommended for post-surgical periods and for patients experiencing nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Clear liquid means you may consume only food and drinks that you can see through, even though they may have color, such as apple juice. A clear liquid diet does not contain an adequate supply of calories and nutrients and should not be used for more than a few days.

Food Recommendations

A clear liquid diet is not recommended for daily use, but it will help prepare patients for certain medical procedures and alleviate symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. When adopting a short-term liquid diet, the following types of liquids may be considered.

  • Clear fruit juices without pulp, e.g. apple juice, white grape juice, cranberry juice, etc.
  • Black coffee or tea (no dairy), clear sodas, water
  • Bouillon, broths fat free consomm
