Capital Digestive Care is pleased to welcome Karen Chachu, MD, to our North Bethesda and National Harbor offices. Dr. Chachu is a boardcertified gastroenterologist with specialized expertise in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. She is dedicated to delivering patientcentered, evidencebased care that helps individuals improve and maintain their digestive health.
Dr. Chachu was first inspired to enter medicine by her childhood pediatrician, whose thoughtful and caring approach left a lasting impression. As she developed a passion for science, she felt called to combine medical discovery with compassionate care to give patients the best possible options for their health.
“I strive to offer patientcentered care that is based on current best practices,” Dr. Chachu said. “I work to understand my patients and provide them with treatment options. This enables them to be active participants in their care journey.”
Before joining Capital Digestive Care, Dr. Chachu served as an associate professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at Duke University, where she cared for patients with complex GI conditions. She also contributed to several national clinical guidelines that help shape today’s standards for managing inflammatory bowel diseases. She is a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA).
Dr. Chachu earned her medical degree and a PhD in immunology from Washington University in St. Louis and completed her residency, gastroenterology fellowship, and advanced inflammatory bowel disease fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.
In addition to treating all general gastrointestinal conditions, Dr. Chachu has a special clinical focus on:
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
- Crohn’s disease
- Ulcerative colitis
Outside the office, she enjoys traveling, movies, museums, reading, and gardening.
