Driven to help people in her career, Leila Kissick, ARNP, DNP-BC, initially worked as a public school teacher. Some of her students had health issues, which piqued her curiosity about health care. She began to consider health care as a way she could improve people’s lives through an avenue other than education.
Today, Leila is a nurse practitioner with a doctorate in nursing practice who has been in practice since 2014. Leila provides general gastroenterology (GI) care and enjoys working alongside her patients as a team with the shared goal of helping the patient achieve better health. She is very interested in how people’s diets affect their GI health. She works with her patients to make simple dietary changes that can improve health.
Leila earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, followed by a bachelor of science in nursing degree from Washburn University in Topeka, KS. She earned a master’s degree in visionary leadership from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK, before completing her doctorate in nursing practice at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ.
“I look at patients as team members. We are on the journey together, and as a team, we can improve the patient’s health. The relationship with patients is of the utmost importance,” Leila said.
Before joining Capital Digestive Care, Leila worked as a nurse practitioner at Tampa Family Health Centers in Tampa, FL. She also served as an adjunct nursing professor with Colorado Technical University’s online RN to BSN program. She has been a nurse since 1995 and also spent nearly two decades teaching. Her doctoral thesis was on the nurse-patient relationship and was the start of a new nursing theory. While at the University of Arizona, Leila was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau, the international nursing honor society.
Leila has two children, both of whom she adopted from China. She loves to travel the world, do jigsaw puzzles as well as word or number puzzles, and read biographies and autobiographies. She has a chihuahua named Paco and three cats: Avery, Kip, and Keanu.
